• Background: Human GPX7 is believed to be a member of the glutathione peroxidase family of proteins. These proteins play important roles in cellular defensemechanisms against oxidative damage. This isaccomplished by catalyzing the reduction ofhydroperoxides and hydrogen peroxide through thereducing substrate, glutathione. GPX7 protects esophageal epithelia from hydrogen peroxide-induced oxidative stress. It suppresses acidic bile acid-induced reactive oxigen species (ROS) and protects against oxidative DNA damage and double-strand breaks.
