What are Mycoplasma?
Mycoplasma are the smallest self-reproducing prokaryotes with a genome size estimated to be as small as 600kb. This genus of bacteria lack a cell wall, which makes them resistant to beta-lactam antibiotics. The presence of Mycoplasma in any cell culture can produce devastating, unexpected results and has been seen to inhibit cell proliferation and induce apoptosis in some cell lines.
Mycoplasma contamination remains a prominent issue in biopharmaceutical manufacturing and research labs globally. Early detection can prevent loss of valuable products, and most importantly, inaccurate or erroneous experimental results.
