Background | Testosterone is the principal androgen, or male sex hormone. One of the group of compounds known as anabolic steroids, testosterone is secreted by the testes but is also synthesized in small quantities in the ovaries, cortices of the adrenal glands, and placenta, usually from cholesterol. Testosterone has a hydroxyl group at the C17 position which can be esterified, or altered by the substitution of an acid or other groups. Oxidation of the 17-b-OH to a 17-keto group, or conversion to a 17 a-OH, results in steroids with significantly decreased androgen activity. |
