Background | CD205 is a type I C-type lectin-like molecule that acts as an endocytic receptor to direct captured antigens from the extracellular space to a specialized antigen-processing compartment (1, 2). It functions to deliver antigen to dendritic cells for presentation on MHC class II and cross-presentation on MHC class I. Thus, CD205 plays an important role in CD4 and CD8 T cell tolerance induction to self-antigen both in the periphery and in the thymus. It is expressed at high levels on cortical thymic epithelium, thymic medullary DCs (CD11c+ CD8+), and subsets of peripheral DCs (CD11c+ CD8+ splenic/lymph node DCs, dermal/interstitial DCs, and Langerhans cells) (2). In addition, CD205 causes reduced proliferation of B-lymphocytes (1). |
