Background | Neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) also called Lipocalin-2 (LCN2), is a protein that in humans is encoded by the LCN2 gene. NGAL belongs to the lipocalin family. Members of this family transport small hydrophobic molecules such as lipids, steroid hormones and retinoids. NGAL plays a role in innate immunity by limiting bacterial growth as a result of sequestering iron-containing siderophores. This protein is thought to be involved in multiple cellular processes, including maintenance of skin homeostasis, and suppression of invasiveness and metastasis. The presence of this protein in blood and urine is an early biomarker of acute kidney injury. NGAL can also be used as predictive biomarker for chronic kidney disease, contrast induced nephropathy, and delayed graft function following kidney transplantation. |
