Gene Summary This gene encodes a tight junction-associated protein. Incorporation of the encoded protein into tight junctions occurs at a late stage of formation of the junctions. The encoded protein localizes to the Golgi and may function in vesicle trafficking. Alternatively spliced transcript variants have been described. A related pseudogene exists on the X chromosome. Transcript Variant: This variant (4) differs in the 5' UTR and lacks an in-frame portion of the 5' coding region, compared to variant 1. The resulting isoform (b) is shorter than isoform a. Variants 3-6, 16, and 17 all encode the same isoform (b).
