Gene Summary The protein encoded by this gene is a mitochondrial phosphate-activated glutaminase that catalyzes the hydrolysis of glutamine to stoichiometric amounts of glutamate and ammonia. Originally thought to be liver-specific, this protein has been found in other tissues as well. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants that encode different isoforms. Transcript Variant: This variant (4) differs in the 5' UTR and 5' coding region and uses a downstream start codon compared to variant 1. It encodes isoform 4 which has a shorter N-terminus compared to isoform 1. Both variants 4 and 5 encode the same isoform (4).
