Background | Rad50, a 153kDa protein, is associated with Mre11 and Nbs1 (Nibrin or p95) to form a multiprotein complex involved in the double strand break repair process. Rad50 is a member of the family of structural maintenance of chromosome (SMC) proteins. Members of this family share similar structures consisting of globular N- and C-termini separated by a coiled-coil domain. At the base of the coiled-coil region is a zinc binding motif, the zinc hook. The zinc hook mediates Rad50 dimerization through the linkage of two Rad50 coiled-coil tails. |
