Background | CCR5 is the major co-receptor for macrophage-tropic isolates of HIV-1. CCR5, also known as CD195, is a seven transmembrane chemokine receptor capable of binding RANTES, MIP-1 alpha and MIP-1 beta. Knockout mice show a decreased recruitment of macrophages and increased susceptibility to infection. Protein and mRNA has been found in macrophages from thioglycolate-treated and activated T cells. The HM-CCR5(7A4) monoclonal antibody binds the N terminal extracellular domain of mouse CCR5 with no crossreactivity to human CCR5. |
