Background | Originally identified as an immunoglobulin heavy chain-binding protein in pre-B cells, BiP was found to be involved in stress responses and also as a molecular chaperone in intracellular protein transport, prevention of protein toxicity and direction of protein folding and assembly in the endoplasmic reticulum. Because so many ER proteins interact transiently with BiP, it may play a key role in monitoring protein transport through the cell. |
