Background | Angiopoietin-related protein 4 (ANGPTL4), also known as angiopoietin-like protein 4, hepatic fibrinogen/angiopoietin-related protein, ARP4, HFARP, PGAR, NL2, FIAF, pp1158, and ANGPTL2, stops proliferation, movement, and tubule formation of endothelial cells and helps to prevent vascular leaking. ANGPTL4 is critical for regulation of glucose homeostasis and insulin sensitivity. The ANGPTL4 protein is a hormone that controls lipid metabolism and helps to regulate apoptosis. ANGPTL4 is characterized by hypoxia-induced expression in endothelial cells. During periods of hypoxia, ANGPTL4 is found in high levels in the sub-endothelial extracellular matrix, and the increased presence of ANGPTL4 hinders the adhesion of the endothelial cells. Many researchers believe ANGPTL4 can inhibit tumor motility and invasiveness as well as regulate angiogenesis. ANGPTL4 is a member of the angiopoietin/angiopoientin-like gene family and is found in high levels in the placenta, heart, liver, muscle, pancreas, and lungs. Lower levels of ANGPTL4 can be found in the brain and kidney. Researchers have found that increasing levels of ANGPTL4 in patients with breast cancer can prevent further cancer movement and growth as ANGPTL4 stops the tumor's ability to adhere (PMID: 21860410). Other researchers, however, believe higher levels of ANGPTL4 actually help colorectal cancer metastasize (PMID: 21937683). A third group of research indicates that screening for ANGPTL4 could help determine the origin of clear-cell carcinomas (PMID: 20454689). |
Synonyms | ANGPTL2; ARP4; FIAF; HARP; HFARP; NL2; PGAR; pp1158; TGQTL; UNQ171 |
Note | This ANGPTL4 antibody is useful for Immunocytochemistry/Immunofluorescence and Western blot, where a band is observed ~48 kDa in multiple human tissues and 3T3-L1 cell lysates. In ICC/IF, vesicular staining was observed in U2OS cells. |
