Background Keratins are a family of intermediate filament proteins that assemble into filaments through forming heterodimers of one type I keratin (keratins 9 to 23) and one type II keratin (keratins 1 to 8). Keratins demonstrate tissue and differentiation specific expression profiles. Keratins 5 and 14 are the predominant keratins in basal layer keratinocytes in stratified epithelia. Their expression is restricted to basal cells and are found on all keratinocytes. Keratin 14 is one of two keratins that distinguish stratifying epithelial cell types from simple epithelial cell types. Mutations in keratin 5 or 14 cause the skin blistering disorder epidermolysis bullosa simplex. LH8 may be useful as a basal cell marker and myoepithelial marker in stratified squamous or mixed epithelia.
