Background | Integrins are heterodimeric cell surface receptors composed of alpha and beta subunits, which mediate cell-cell and cell-extracellular matrix attachments. Aberrant integrin expression has been found in many epithelial tumours. Changes in integrin expression have been shown to be important for the growth and early metastatic capacity of melanoma cells. Integrin aV associates with integrin b3 to form the osteoclast functional antigen (vitronectin receptor). Integrin aV is found in osteoclasts, placenta, melanoma cell lines and some epithelial cell lines. Expression of integrin aV increases with melanoma progression. |
Synonyms | CD51; MSK8; VNRA; VTNR |
Note | Human alpha v is about 150-160kDa under non-reducing conditions. Under reducing conditions it is cleaved into 2 bands of about 125-130kDa +20-25kDa. |
