• Background: S-100 protein is an acidic protein antigen present on certain cells and useful as a marker in anatomic pathology. The name is derived from the fact that the protein is 100% soluble in ammonium sulfate at neutral pH. The protein binds calcium and is structurally similar to calmodulin. The function of S-100 is unknown.
