Background | TIGAR (TP53 induced glycolysis and apoptosis regulator) is a novel p53-inducible gene, that shows similarity to the bisphosphatase domain of the bifunctional enzyme 6-phosphofructo-2-kinase/fructose 2,6-bisphosphatase, the main regulator of glycolysis. TIGAR functions to lower fructose-2,6-bisphosphate levels in cells, resulting in an inhibition of glycolysis, and an overall decrease in intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, correlating with a decreased sensitivity to apoptosis. |
