Background | CD10, also known as Common Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia Antigen (CALLA), is a 100-kDa type II transmembrane glycoprotein enzyme with neutral metalloendopeptidase activity which cleaves a variety of biologically active peptides hormones including glucagon, enkephalins, sybstance P, neurotensin, oxytocin and bradykinin. CD10 is largely expressed in ALL of lymphoblastic, Burkitt’s, and follicular germinal center lymphomas, as well as on CML of the surface of normal early lymphoid progenitor cells, immature B cells within adult bone marrow and germinal center B cells within lymphoid tissue. However, it is also found on a variety of normal tissues, such as breast myoepithelial cells, bile canaliculi, fibroblasts, with especially high expression on the brush border of kidney and gut epithelial cells. CD10 is present on leukemic cell of pre-B phenotype, which represenst 85% of cases of acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL), thus it is an important cell surface marker in the diagnosis of human ALL. |
