Background SOX6 gene encodes a member of the D subfamily of sex determining region y-related transcription factors that are characterized by a conserved DNA-binding domain termed the high mobility group box and by their ability to bind the minor groove of DNA. SOX6 protein is a transcriptional activator that is specifically expressed in the developing central nervous system and in the early stages of chondrogenesis in mouse embryos. It is found to be essential to both cartilage formation/chondrogenesis and obesity-related insulin resistance. The SOX6 protein is also detected in glioma patient sera and brain tissues.
Synonyms EVI16
