Background | Ghrelin is a 28-amino acid appetite stimulating peptide hormone secreted by enteroendocrine cells of the gastrointestinal tract (P/D1-type cells in humans), especially the stomach, and circulates in the bloodstream during fasting conditions. It is known to prepare for food intake by increasing gastric motility and gastric acid secretion. Ghrelin has several functions including activation of cells in the anterior pituitary gland and hypothalamic arcuate nucleus that initiate appetite, stimulation of brain structures having a specific receptor – the growth hormone secretagogue receptor 1A (GHSR-1A), and also participation in other regulations such as learning and memory, the sleep-wake cycle, taste sensation, reward behavior, and glucose metabolism. This antibody was generated by immunization of rabbits with Ghrelin coupled to a carrier protein. |
