Gene Summary This gene encodes a protein that is involved in endoplasmic reticulum-to-Golgi trafficking and regulation of cholesterol metabolism. Three major classes of transcripts are generated from this gene- melanoma inhibitory activity 2-specific transcripts, cTAGE family member 5-specific transcripts and transcripts that include exons from both these transcript species. Additionally, alternative splicing in these transcripts results in multiple transcript variants encoding diverse isoforms. A mutation in this gene (couch-potato or cpto) may result in low levels of plasma cholesterol and triglycerides. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2016]
Transcript Variant: This variant (3) lacks several 5' exons and reflects the use of an alternate internal promoter, compared to variant 1. It encodes the cTAGE family member 5 protein (isoform 3), which is shorter and has a distinct N-terminus, compared to isoform 1. Sequence Note: The RefSeq transcript and protein were derived from genomic sequence to make the sequence consistent with the reference genome assembly. The genomic coordinates used for the transcript record were based on alignments. CCDS Note: The coding region has been updated to extend the N-terminus to one that is supported by available conservation data. The use of an alternative upstream start codon would result in a protein that is 17 aa longer.
