The encoded protein is involved in the transport of dietary iron from epithelial cells of the intestinal lumen into the circulatory system, and may be involved in copper transport and homeostasis. In mouse, defects in this gene can lead to severe microcytic anemia. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants. [provided by RefSeq, Aug 2013]
Transcript Variant: This variant (2) differs in its 5' UTR, and initiates translation at a downstream start codon, compared to variant 1. The resulting isoform (b) has a shorter N-terminus, compared to isoform a. Variants 2 and 13 both encode the same isoform (b).
