Gene Summary This gene encodes a member of the ADAM (a disintegrin and metalloprotease domain) family. Members of this family are membrane-anchored proteins structurally related to snake venom disintegrins, and have been implicated in a variety of biological processes involving cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions, including fertilization, muscle development, and neurogenesis. This protein is a type I transmembrane protein implicated in asthma and bronchial hyperresponsiveness. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms. Transcript Variant: This variant (2) lacks an in-frame exon in the coding region, as compared to variant 1. It encodes isoform beta, which lacks an internal segment, but has the same N- and C-termini as isoform alpha. The encoded isoform (beta) may undergo proteolytic processing similar to isoform alpha. Sequence Note: This RefSeq record was created from transcript and genomic sequence data to make the sequence consistent with the reference genome assembly.
