Gene Name | Homo sapiens hypoxanthine phosphoribosyltransferase 1 (HPRT1) |

Background | HPRT is a transferase, which catalyzes conversion of hypoxanthine to inosine monophosphate and guanine to guanosine monophosphate via transfer of the 5-phosphoribosyl group from 5-phosphoribosyl 1-pyrophosphate. HPRT, which acts as a catalyst in the reaction between guanine and phosphoribosyl pyrophosphate to form GMP, functions primarily to salvage purines from degraded DNA to renewed purine synthesis. |
