Background The human Williams Syndrome Transcription Factor (WSTF) gene is located within the common Williams Syndrome deletion area at chromosome 7q11.23. Its functional motifs include a PHD zinc finger motif followed by a bromodomain. Both motifs are found in many transcription factors, suggesting that WSTF may function as a transcription factor. WSTF forms a chromatinremodelling complex that mobilizes nucleosomes and reconfigures irregular chromatin to a regular nucleosomal array structure. The drosophila Acf1 gene is structurally related to the human WSTF gene.
