Gene Summary This gene encodes a member of the runt domain-containing family of transcription factors. This protein is essential for osteoblastic differentiation and skeletal morphogenesis and acts as a scaffold for nucleic acids and regulatory factors involved in skeletal gene expression. The protein can bind DNA both as a monomer or, with more affinity, as a subunit of a heterodimeric complex. Transcript variants that encode different protein isoforms result from the use of alternate promoters as well as alternate splicing. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2015]
Transcript Variant: This variant (2) represents use of a proximal promoter. It lacks two alternate exons including the 5' UTR and a portion of the 5' coding region, and initiates translation in an alternate 5' segment, compared to variant 1. The encoded isoform (2, also known as MRIPV) has a distinct N-terminus and is shorter than isoform 1. Sequence Note: The RefSeq transcript and protein were derived from genomic sequence to make the sequence consistent with the reference genome assembly. The genomic coordinates used for the transcript record were based on alignments.
